{"id":18,"date":"2008-01-08T18:26:42","date_gmt":"2008-01-09T02:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/?p=18"},"modified":"2010-05-26T06:29:32","modified_gmt":"2010-05-26T14:29:32","slug":"tis-the-season-for-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/?p=18","title":{"rendered":"Tis the Season for Rain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Okay I&#8217;m getting a bit stir crazy with having to take some time off the bike as well as all the rain.\u00a0\u00a0 Folks please give our wet trails some recovery time after these rains.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Here are excerpts from a couple years of this topic being float around on some the various forums sites.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Most folks think there should be some sort of disclaimer with this type of guideline.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stuff like the rating depends on how much rain we got.\u00a0\u00a0 These ratings are based on a good rain.\u00a0 <strong>What we have have had this last week has been a pounding! <\/strong>Please be cautious and add a few more days at least to this recommendation.<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><strong><font color=\"#0000ff\">Here is what I&#8217;m thinking of for a rating system for the San Diego area trails.<\/font><\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\"><strong><font color=\"#0000ff\">\u00a0<\/font><\/strong>1 &#8211; Could ride there in rain or the day after.<br \/>\n2-5 &#8211; Two to five days<br \/>\n6-7 &#8211; About a week<br \/>\n8-9 &#8211; More than a week upwards to three weeks<br \/>\n10 &#8211; Place is a wreak after a rain, can take more three weeks to dry out enough so riding on it will not trash it.<br \/>\nHere are the trails I&#8217;m looking at (Most here on the site)<br \/>\n<strong>North County<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<br \/>\nCalvera Lake &#8211; 5<br \/>\nDaley Ranch &#8211; 3<br \/>\nElfin Forest &#8211; 3<br \/>\nFlightline &#8211; 4<br \/>\nLake Hodges &#8211; Northside -7<br \/>\nLake Hodges &#8211; Southside &#8211; 7<br \/>\nNate Harrision Grade &#8211; 2 &#8211;<br \/>\nSanta Margarita River Trail &#8211; 1 &#8211; Mostly sandy trails that are best after a good rain packdown.<br \/>\nTenaja Truck Trail &#8211; 2<\/font><font size=\"3\"> <\/font><font size=\"3\">Mission Trails &#8211; 4<br \/>\nCowles and Pyles Peak &#8211;\u00a0 3<br \/>\nSpring and Oak Canyon &#8211; 3<br \/>\nPenasquitos Canyon &#8211; Most Trails &#8211; 5<br \/>\nDel Mar Mesa &#8211; 7 &#8211; Place gets some of that sticky clay that will freeze up your tires<br \/>\nSweetwater &#8211; 10 &#8211; Probably the worst area in San Diego. Give it a freaking month.<br \/>\nSycamore Canyon\/Goodan Ranch &#8211; North End &#8211; 4, South End &#8211; 8<br \/>\nTriCanyons Area (Rose, San Clemente, Tecolate)<\/font><font size=\"3\"><strong>East County<br \/>\n<\/strong>Anderson Truck Trail &#8211; 1 &#8211; Probably the best in area for after rain riding<br \/>\nBlack Mountain in Ramona &#8211; 4<br \/>\nCuyamacas &#8211; 6<br \/>\nLake Morena &#8211; 2<br \/>\nLaguna Mountains\/BLT &#8211; 6<br \/>\nIndian Creek &#8211; 3<br \/>\nNoble Canyon -3<br \/>\nOriflamme Canyon -4<\/p>\n<p>This would also be a good time to gather up some &#8220;rules&#8221; about San Diego riding after rains. Like:<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Give the trails it due time<\/strong>.<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Use your brakes wisely, Don&#8217;t be a Skidiot!<br \/>\n<\/strong>&#8211; <strong>Ride through any puddles not around it<\/strong>. If you don&#8217;t like getting dirty, get a road bike.\u00a0\u00a0 <em><font color=\"#0000ff\">This caused quite a bit of discussion.\u00a0 The general thinking being that if the puddle goes all the way across a trail, trying to go around it is only going to widen the trail and make an even bigger puddle.\u00a0 Under these conditions it is best to go straight through the puddle.\u00a0\u00a0 Now if the puddle does not go all the way and you have room on the <strong>orginal trail line<\/strong>, go ahead around it.<\/font><\/em><br \/>\n&#8211;
