Rim of the Grand Canyon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>few days ago I got back from a vacation that included a few days in the Las Vegas that included seeing Aerosmith in concert.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Wow, can those guys still kick some ass on stage!\u00a0 After the Vegas portion of vacation we continued northward and eastward to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.\u00a0\u00a0 This was my third time out here and Nichol\u2019s first.\u00a0\u00a0 I first came out here on an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/AZ06NRGC1.htm\"> Arizona in Summer roadtrip in 2006<\/a> and then again on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/AZ10-NRGC-RainbowRim.htm\">Flagstaff &amp; North Rim trip in 2010<\/a>.\u00a0 You don\u2019t come out here for\u00a0technical riding, you come out here for the incredible scenery and the experience of riding on the only singletrack currently open to mountain bikes along the rim of the Grand Canyon.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Rainbow Rim trail is in the Kaibab National Forest and is miles and miles away from pavement, cell phone coverage and any of the tourist trappings of the Grand Canyon National Park despite the border of the national park being just a few feet below the rim of the canyon in this area.\u00a0\u00a0 The place requires a commitment to visit but it is well worth it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-03AUG15-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2102\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/245594221eded71f09dd4b5e07255a2b.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"AZ15-NRGC-03AUG15-01\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0made our way out to the Kaibab Plateau on\u00a0a Monday\u00a0and made our way out to the middle of five points that stick out into the canyon, Locust Point.\u00a0 We had the entire point to ourselves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-03AUG15-05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2091\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/a4d91fd712508916a09e5e11319cec17.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"AZ15-NRGC-03AUG15-05\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n(Nichol looking out from Fence Point)<\/p>\n<p>Now between an overuse\u00a0injury and an illness I had been off the bike for a two solid months.\u00a0\u00a0 The injury was (and still is) tendonitis in my elbows.\u00a0\u00a0 I had\u00a0been trying all kinds of things but rest and all I really managed to do was\u00a0make it worse to the point where it was not only painful to steer the bike, but painful to do all kinds of daily activities.\u00a0\u00a0Just about when I was ready to get back on the bike I came down with some nasty flavor of the crud and that kept me off the bike for another couple of weeks.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m going to call it a\u00a0blessing in disguise for my elbows.\u00a0\u00a0So the following morning when we headed out on the trail\u00a0the general decline in\u00a0fitness along with the\u00a0trail undulating between 7,500 and 7,750 feet was quite a wake-up call for this sea-level slacker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2093\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/2ace609cc77e6c0e666b1cb8c9884026.jpg?resize=607%2C911\" alt=\"AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-17\" width=\"607\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The good news for me is that the Rainbow Rim trail is not a\u00a0trail to be bombed.\u00a0 If you come out here to work on your Strava time you are an idiot.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a stop and smell the flowers kind of place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-19.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2095\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/375c402b9e5eefb37fa8012942129751.jpg?resize=607%2C911\" alt=\"AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-19\" width=\"607\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We split the Rainbow Rim trail up into two days.\u00a0\u00a0 On the first day we did an out and back from camp to Parissawampitts Point for a total of 18 miles.\u00a0\u00a0 I was dragging by time we got back to camp<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-25.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2096\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/e6ec176c5f5f88295fbb808a115ff841.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-25\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A killer little meadow<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-26.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think aspens are one of the pretty trees there are and I really like how they are intermingled along the trail with the large pines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-28.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2098\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/5340a288dafb1867956cb46e72eae72a.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"AZ15-NRGC-04AUG15-28\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>MEAT!\u00a0\u00a0 Big fat cowboy style T-bones cooked over a campfire about 20 feet from the rim.\u00a0 Life is good!\u00a0\u00a0 There were\u00a0only a few hours between sunset and moonrise but in that time the stars that could be seen were crazy amazing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-05AUG15-02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The following morning we did an out of and back from Locust Point to Timp Point.\u00a0 The trail in this direction was just as awesome as the previous day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ15-NRGC-05AUG15-07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we got to Timp Point, I wanted to show Nichol the Thunder River coming out of the side of the canyon.\u00a0\u00a0 I thought I was looking in the right direction but was quite befuddled.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ10-Day6-NRGC-RR-09JUN10-58a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2109\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/7b75e4bddd3e22f1a2c3897117a2c067.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"AZ10-Day6-NRGC-RR-09JUN10-58a\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was not until after the trip when I reviewed my photos from the 2010 that I figured out my mistake.\u00a0 The photo above is from the 2010 trip.\u00a0 Notice the slightly different angle of the \u201cslot\u201d of the canyon\u00a0in the above shot and the one of it from this years trip.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I had forgotten that we hiked down a trail at Timp Point\u00a0that goes further out onto the point.\u00a0\u00a0 It sheds off quite a bit of elevation, but you have to do this to get the right angle to be able to see further down into the canyon that reveals Thunder River.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AZ10-Day6-NRGC-RR-09JUN10-57a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2108\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/087bae75f5a7c378477b523252b894b7.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"AZ10-Day6-NRGC-RR-09JUN10-57a\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a zoomed in shot of Thunder River.\u00a0Those are not bushes but trees!<\/p>\n<p>There is an 8-mile extension of the Rainbow Rim trail in the works.\u00a0\u00a0 It will consist of 3 miles and change of new singletrack and a decommissioned forest service road will be converted to trail.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I rode about 1.5 miles or so of the roughed in new single track beyond Timp Point before heading back to Timp Point.\u00a0\u00a0 It will be a sweet extension when complete.\u00a0\u00a0 The cruise back to Locust Point was just as awesome as the outgoing leg and the chunk of the extension I did brought the days mileage up to 21 miles of coolness.\u00a0\u00a0 We had another lovely evening and we casually broke camp the following morning to start the road trip back to San Diego.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This was such an awesome trip and well worth the effort to get out here.\u00a0\u00a0 This will not be my last time out
