little bit of Skyline DH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On a whim, I decided to head up to Corona and investigate a trail I have l been eyeing for a year or so.\u00a0\u00a0 To get there I needed to climb the Skyline Drive Fireroad on the the northeast side of the Santa Ana Mountains.\u00a0\u00a0 I arrived at the trailhead at fairly descent time and since this was an on-a-whim ride, I was joined by all of my friends.\u00a0\u00a0 The temps were pretty nice as I started my solo climb up the fireroad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mtbbill.com\/cpg\/albums\/SkylineDH-23NOV08\/normal_SkylineDH-23NOV08-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/a3c5c0fb0366c7e0b102638982f6547b.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" imagescaler=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/a3c5c0fb0366c7e0b102638982f6547b.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the grade did not seem steep, I was surprised how quickly the elevation stacked\u00a0up.\u00a0 There were some nice views to the north despite the ickyness that was setting down in the valleys below (That is not fog).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mtbbill.com\/cpg\/albums\/SkylineDH-23NOV08\/normal_SkylineDH-23NOV08-06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/5bf07c55a3cc6819451883ac9be3451b.jpg?resize=433%2C650\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" imagescaler=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/5bf07c55a3cc6819451883ac9be3451b.jpg?resize=433%2C650\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The climb went by quicker than expected and I even got a really cool treat.\u00a0 I rounded a corner to see a young bobcat crossing the fireroad.\u00a0 The cat was not much bigger than your average house kitty.\u00a0 He climbed up a steep embackment and stood at the top looking down at me for a good 15-20 seconds.\u00a0 I was trying to get my camera out without causing him to bolt, but as soon as he saw the camera come out of the bag and me start to raise it, he stepped into the brush.\u00a0\u00a0 Geez, he was pretty.\u00a0 It was awesome to get to admire one of these critters up close.\u00a0 It was not long after this encounter that\u00a0I made it to Beek&#8217;s Place and continued along Main Divide past the golfball.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mtbbill.com\/cpg\/albums\/SkylineDH-23NOV08\/normal_SkylineDH-23NOV08-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/1cdc0b74a8d1eca65842744ada2fd175.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" imagescaler=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/1cdc0b74a8d1eca65842744ada2fd175.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0I have been tinkering with a new helmet camera mounting setup that would allow to get away from having a dedicated helmet for the camera system.\u00a0 Wearing the helmet camera on long climbs when you are not filming is a bummer.\u00a0 I want to be able to quickly remove the camera gear so that I could only carry a single helmet on a ride.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The new setup basically uses the quick-release mounts designed for\u00a0professional\/prosumer grade camera tripods.\u00a0\u00a0When completed\u00a0this setup should be must more versatile.\u00a0\u00a0So far I have only completed\u00a0my full-face helmet.\u00a0\u00a0 That was also part of the reason I chose this trail, it seemed silly to bring a full-face helmetcam out to some place like Penasquitos Canyon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mtbbill.com\/cpg\/albums\/SkylineDH-23NOV08\/normal_SkylineDH-23NOV08-13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/11eee1cf883ba538ef1670c86779616c.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" imagescaler=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/11eee1cf883ba538ef1670c86779616c.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After about a mile of climbing on Main Divide Truck Trail, I reached the &#8220;Skyline DH&#8221; (Have no idea what it&#8217;s actual name is yet).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I was looking at this ridgeline quite a bit on the climb up and it certainly looked to have some steepness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mtbbill.com\/cpg\/albums\/SkylineDH-23NOV08\/normal_SkylineDH-23NOV08-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/39b0f66ee41b9a42009b81c32f17583c.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" imagescaler=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/39b0f66ee41b9a42009b81c32f17583c.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Steepness it did have.\u00a0\u00a0 While this trail felt a little like <a title=\"Bell Ridge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/BellRidge.htm\">Bell Ridge <\/a>at the beginning it soon became much more like Coldwater.\u00a0\u00a0 These types of trails are somewhat of an acquired taste.\u00a0There were some sections of pure adrenaline rush as you just\u00a0flew down the trail.\u00a0 Other sections were so so steep that you had to\u00a0be somewhat surgical\u00a0with controlling\u00a0your bike and the brakes as you could only marginally control your rate of acceleration let alone stop. \u00a0I like sections like that for the challenge\u00a0they present but\u00a0they are not\u00a0my favorites.\u00a0\u00a0 As I\u00a0neared the bottom, I came\u00a0upon a firecrew contracted out from Oregon to do some debrushing for fire abatement\u00a0on the trail.\u00a0\u00a0They were doing a fine job, but since I\u00a0caught them in mid-workday, they had yet to remove all the trimmings from the trail below them.\u00a0 This made the last bit of descent slow going but overall this ride was well worth it.<\/p>\n<!-- Begin Yuzo --><div class='yuzo_related_post style-1'  data-version='5.12.81'><!--
