{"id":1230,"date":"2014-03-30T14:24:37","date_gmt":"2014-03-30T22:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/?p=1230"},"modified":"2018-09-09T14:28:56","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T22:28:56","slug":"double-play-in-the-san-gabs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/?p=1230","title":{"rendered":"Double Play in the San Gabs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I drove up to the LA area to get in some riding in San Gabriel Mountains.\u00a0 It had been nearly two years (May of 2012) since my last time out of these trails.\u00a0\u00a0(Note: In the process of getting this post together I came across of bunch of pictures from that last visit that had went unpublished so this post contains a mix of pictures from both.\u00a0 My cohort in grime was wearing the checkered shirt yesterday if you need to know which one are more recent.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-29MAY14-MtHilyer-05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/21bd10f73eddfbe70f1d0f26c264e4e2.jpg?resize=607%2C911\" alt=\"SanGabs-29MAY14-MtHilyer-05\" width=\"607\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We did a modified shuttle\/point-to-point ride on this day.\u00a0 We meet up off of Windsor Street in Altadena near NASA\u2019s JPL and left a truck there where the ride was going to finish up.\u00a0\u00a0 We then went up HWY 2 and rode in the Chilao Flats\u00a0area where we got in some riding on Mount Hilyer and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/SilverMoccasion.htm\">Silver Moccasin <\/a>Trails as well as couple other bits.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The weather was great and the riding was just as nice but the damage from the Station Fire really did a number on this area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1429\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/00c7e3625b3614c0d634cf7fc317539e.jpg?resize=683%2C911\" alt=\"SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-06\" width=\"683\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After knocking out a nice loop in that area, we got back in the truck and road over to Eaton Saddle on Mount Wilson Road.\u00a0 From there we hopped on the old Mt Lowe Road where we did a bit of fire road climbing. This is really cool section of fire road that even includes a tunnel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-19.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/3f392694d66c7c6621d3500622fc12ac.jpg?resize=840%2C630\" alt=\"SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-19\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After about a mile on the fire road we turned off onto the Mt Lowe single track.\u00a0 There were some challenging rocky bits on this climb that took us up to around 5,540 feet as the trail were around the eastern flank of the mountain.\u00a0 This would be the highest evaluation we would see for the rest of the day as the truck was down at around 1200 feet.\u00a0 Meaning we were in for some killer descending.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-29MAY14-MtLoweToJPL-03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/9fe486927e0d6de7c780a121b08f5544.jpg?resize=607%2C911\" alt=\"SanGabs-29MAY14-MtLoweToJPL-03\" width=\"607\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Mount Lowe trail was tight and fast with some rocky bits to keep you on your toes.\u00a0 There was some exposure on this trail as well but mostly the kind that is going to leave a mark versus the assuredly kill you kind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-29MAY14-MtLoweToJPL-06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1439\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/f908a017f568f99f569a3480500ce925.jpg?resize=607%2C911\" alt=\"SanGabs-29MAY14-MtLoweToJPL-06\" width=\"607\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Mt Lowe trail\u00a0 eventually dumped us back out onto the Mt Lowe road where we quickly turned off onto the Sam Merrill Trail.\u00a0\u00a0 Oh My what an awesome bit of trail this was.\u00a0 I particularly enjoyed the opening section that has been spared by the first that was wonderfully wooded with tight single track on the rocky hillside.\u00a0\u00a0 Laughter could be heard through the woods during our transit through here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-47.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1431\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/a0e549eaa4ad66aeed907aa5fdb9a267.jpg?resize=840%2C630\" alt=\"SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-47\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trail eventually dumps you back out into open scrub brush and views all the way down into the LA basin are to be had.\u00a0\u00a0 You can also see quite a bit of the trail that lay ahead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-50.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1432\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/b251d18995cd52896d4f71d3f735ddd4.jpg?resize=683%2C911\" alt=\"SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-50\" width=\"683\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The section down to Echo Mountain has plenty of technical goodness, tight switch backs and some exposure spots that could ruin your day or year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-62.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1443\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/053fdd43dcddfea5bfbe1efbd78437a6.jpg?resize=840%2C630\" alt=\"SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-62\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once we got down to Echo Mountain, we climbed\u00a0the Echo Mountain Trail back over to the lower parts of Mt Lowe road.\u00a0 This trail follows along the old track bed of the Mt Lowe Railway which operated between 1893 to 1936.\u00a0 The cement foundations for trestles are still in place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-29MAY14-MtLoweToJPL-15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1436\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/28d504bd3fc266534783d9618f613229.jpg?resize=607%2C911\" alt=\"SanGabs-29MAY14-MtLoweToJPL-15\" width=\"607\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just a 100 yards or so down the old road from where the Echo Mountain trail comes out is the top of the Sunset Ridge\u00a0trail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-76.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/d082c2b13bc91d55f53d16f1376b2af2.jpg?resize=840%2C630\" alt=\"SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-76\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More downhill goodness ensued for about the next 3.3 miles (with a short road interconnect) where the trail comes out in the Millard campground.\u00a0 After the campground there was about a mile of fire road climbing to keep you honest.\u00a0\u00a0 From there we hooked with the El Prieto trail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-87.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/38bd1bf6ff45fe9992907ee82e8ac1e2.jpg?resize=840%2C630\" alt=\"SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-87\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This trail was just a hoot with some fast flowing sections, creek crossing and technical bits to keep you on your toes.\u00a0 While we were overall shedding off elevation there we enough undulations to get some quick climbing grunts in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-98.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/7d38f266ad4bd2bbcd270aca9f4f5ba5.jpg?resize=683%2C911\" alt=\"SanGabs-MtLowe-JPL-13MAY12-98\" width=\"683\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The El Prieto trail dumps out onto a fireroad that feeds down to Arryo Blvd (closed to vehicles) where it is followed back up into civilization and Windsor St where the other truck was waiting.\u00a0\u00a0After we drove back up to the top to grab the other truck we kicked back and enjoyed the view while shooting breeze before getting heading off for the rest of our weekend.\u00a0\u00a0 It was way\u00a0 good times on the bike today.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(I\u2019m planning a get a page with directions and GPS data up on this ride in the coming
