Father&#8217;s Day Ride"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bright and early on Father&#8217;s Day, I jumped into the truck and headed down to the Southbay area of the county.\u00a0\u00a0 Jamul would be the closest town for a Father&#8217;s Day ride with some of the Bonita Biker&#8217;s crew.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We met up at the 1,000 trails RV park on Otay Lakes Road.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/normal_SouthBaySD-1000Trails-20JUN10-01.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were lots of folks I had not meet before.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ali, &#8220;Mr Izi, Jose, James, Gil, Rob were some of the name I caught.\u00a0 Forgive me (and contact me) if I missed your name.\u00a0 The ride today was billed as a social ride on some of the fireroads in the and Jamul Mountains.\u00a0 Having not spent much time in this area I was interested.\u00a0\u00a0 We started off north and worked our way through some valleys until we came to a bit of San Diego history.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/normal_SouthBaySD-1000Trails-20JUN10-02.jpg?resize=607%2C911\" alt=\"\" width=\"607\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the remenants of the Jamul Cement Works factory which first started making cement in March of 1891.\u00a0\u00a0 Jose knew the history of this place quite\u00a0 well and was quite the cultural tourguide here.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The San Diego Historical\u00a0Society has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegohistory.org\/journal\/79fall\/cement.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a good article on the\u00a0history of\u00a0this place<\/a> that is well worth a read.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Don&#8217;t miss the link to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegohistory.org\/journal\/79fall\/cementimages.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">period photographs of the plant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A couple of barn owls call this place home and we spooked them off as we approached.\u00a0 At the bottom of the kilns were lots of scat and bones of small rodents.\u00a0\u00a0 It was quite the\u00a0little killing field these nocturnal birds of prey had going.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once back to rolling we had a bit of climbing to do.\u00a0 It was not long but it had some steepness to it.\u00a0 Rob made it look almost easy with the Big data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the\u00a0climbing section we dumped off all of the elevation rather quickly.\u00a0 There were some mighty \u00a0silty sections on the fireroad descent that made following someone really interesting.\u00a0 I wanted to call the descent &#8220;Powder Puff&#8221; hill.\u00a0\u00a0 Once back down the valley floor we did bit of untrammeled trail riding to connect back to the 1,000 trails RV park.\u00a0 I thought\u00a0a section of the California Riding and Hiking Trail went through here, but it may have been destoryed in the fires that went through here a few years back.\u00a0\u00a0 Something to investigate later.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/normal_SouthBaySD-1000Trails-20JUN10-14.jpg?resize=607%2C911\" alt=\"\" width=\"607\" height=\"911\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A handful of folks had to split at this point for some early Father&#8217;s Day commitments.\u00a0\u00a0 The rest of us set out to do a\u00a0loop to the south of Otay Lakes Road.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a\u00a0 fireroad affair, but it was still pretty cool being new dirt for me.\u00a0\u00a0 Before we started climbing in earnest we enjoyed the shade of some large oaks which were just past the line were the 2007 wildfire was stopped in this area.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Once we turned up hill there were\u00a0some\u00a0mild grinding to to for a bit as we worked up out of a valley.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/normal_SouthBaySD-1000Trails-20JUN10-15.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Along the way we went by an old well.\u00a0 It had older wooden parts down below and\u00a0somewhat newer stone work up near the top.\u00a0 There was still water in the well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/normal_SouthBaySD-1000Trails-20JUN10-18.jpg?resize=840%2C560\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We would do a bit more of ridgeline climbing before turning the bikes back down for another\u00a0fast and silty descent followed by\u00a0a quick road connect back to the 1,000 trails RV park and some waiting refreshements.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0All together it was about a 16-17 miles jaunt.\u00a0\u00a0 Not a\u00a0big ride but plenty interesting with good folks to boot.\u00a0 A good time indeed that\u00a0had me home with plenty of time to enjoy Father&#8217;s Day with the family.<\/p>\n<!-- Begin Yuzo --><div class='yuzo_related_post style-1'
