{"id":115,"date":"2008-11-20T13:27:21","date_gmt":"2008-11-20T21:27:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/?p=115"},"modified":"2010-07-16T15:31:27","modified_gmt":"2010-07-16T23:31:27","slug":"a-little-singlespeeding-in-the-tunnels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/?p=115","title":{"rendered":"A Little Singlespeeding in the Tunnels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I took the singlespeed out for a little trail love these Tuesday out at Penasquitos Canyon and the &#8220;Tunnels&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 Tunnels used to be in the &#8220;secret-stash&#8221; catergory but has exploded in popularity with the destruction of Del Mar Mesa and the &#8220;Intestines&#8221; trails.\u00a0\u00a0 You won&#8217;t find much in the way of direct information about Tunnels on the site.\u00a0\u00a0 I have be purposely keeping it off the web due to the ongoing issues of access and trail designations in the area.\u00a0\u00a0Do a search online on Tunnels, Deer Canyon and Los Penasquitos Preserve and you will find lots.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As far as how to get there.\u00a0\u00a0 Go ride, Penasquitos Canyon, when you get the top of the powerline climb, Hang a right and head towards the only three trees on the mesa.\u00a0\u00a0 Explore for hours from there, literally.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BTW, you will get turned around and confused to some degree or another.\u00a0 Enjoy it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mtbbill.com\/cpg\/albums\/Tunnels-PQ-18NOV08\/normal_Tunnels-PQ-18NOV08-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/c18590be31601389d2c842557b61cffd.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" imagescaler=\"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/777c7e0beb53cdf148ee2292e4e07f4b.jpg\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I really love riding in this area.\u00a0 It is a true gem of a trail system.\u00a0 It has been here for many years and most of the network was orginally created by illegal aliens who setup and camps and trails to and from the agriculture fields.\u00a0\u00a0 The illegals have been run out and mountain bikers are slowly but surely cleaning up the mess that was left behind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mtbbill.com\/cpg\/albums\/Tunnels-PQ-18NOV08\/normal_Tunnels-PQ-18NOV08-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/e6094665184f14c66f8b959c3c596777.jpg?resize=433%2C650\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" imagescaler=\"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/addf2b81d893533c2ea361f70afeccd9.jpg\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the trails down in the tunnels there is a series of trails that run along the edge of the &#8220;fingers&#8221; of the mesa above Deer Canyon.\u00a0\u00a0 This simply good freaking singletrack.\u00a0\u00a0 REAL TRAILS, not the doubletrack, drive-a-camero-on-it BS pathway crap that seems to routinely tries to be passed off as trails\u00a0in this county.\u00a0 Yep this is good stuff and the singlespeed was a great bike to enjoy it on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mtbbill.com\/cpg\/albums\/ConnectorRide-06APR08\/ConnectorRide-06APR08-47.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/289bffaba880d8fd61dd55b7c7bfeeca.jpg?resize=433%2C650\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"650\" imagescaler=\"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/c5aacf5f2e138696e640da6a33bef900.jpg\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I rode all around and through the tunnels until I thought I was going to run short on daylight.\u00a0 The\u00a0Tunnels can seem quite dark pretty early in the afternoon so I ended with more\u00a0of the day left than I thought.\u00a0 I decided to take a run up the Cobbles Trail to\u00a0see the damage done to Del Mar Mesa.\u00a0 I had not been up here since the construction started as I really did not want to see it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Cobbles now just ends at the top and\u00a0the top is a terrible thing to look at.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mtbbill.com\/cpg\/albums\/Tunnels-PQ-18NOV08\/normal_Tunnels-PQ-18NOV08-18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: black 3px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/b1fa8996eafc1342913d453b603e6bee.jpg?resize=650%2C433\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" imagescaler=\"http:\/\/www.mountainbikebill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/imagescaler\/f56367d5d1bd7bb263e6acfc1ca314b7.jpg\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I could not help but think of all the ninnies complaining about the impact that we mountain bikers create on the &#8220;Tunnels&#8221; with our waffle tracks.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I would like to take those people up to this spot and pimp slap them until they get &#8220;it&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 These so-called &#8220;stewards of the land&#8221;
