Southern California 2007 Wildfires

Wildfires from Space

October of 2007 was a bad month for Southern California as wildfires destroyed more than 1,500 homes.  A lot of our trails burned as well.  Here is what I have gathered so far regarding our trails.
STATUS - Burned Confirmed - Suspected to have Burned - Confirmed Not Burned

cameraThis indicates there are pictures available.  Instead of simply linking to pictures, when there was a forum discussion about the trail, I linked to the discussion so you could read stories and first hand accounts of the damage.

At this point the list is surely not all inclusive, help get it accurate.  If you have information on any trail that was near the burn areas or wish to confirm a trail is okay, please email me with the information or links.

NOTE: The Los Padres, Angeles, Cleveland and San Bernardino National Forests reopened in early November 2007.  However many of the burned areas remain closed. I have provide somed information on the closures below, but stay tuned to the National Forest links above. This is also a great time to get involved with your local Mountain Bike Association and help out with your membership and trailwork.

NOTES

1 Most of the trails in the Santa Ana Mountains that burned are expected to be closed for one year to allow the area to recover. There will some limited docent led rides under special use permits. This will be arranged through local advocacy groups such as the Warrior's Society.
2 Silverado was not burned but it was bull-dozed into a fire break. Some trailwork has already been done to speed it recovery Pics Available
3 You can not do the loop as describe on my page. You can only go up to Beek's Place as Main Divide and the Silverado trail are closed
4 The Joplin trail itself did not burn but you can not legally access the trail due to the closure of the other trails required to connect to it.
